Do Monkeys Practice the Oldest Occupation?

first_imgIf monkeys do it, should it be outlawed?  A story on Fox News claims that male monkeys pay for sex.  The females make them pay up first: “The males use grooming as a form of currency to buy sex from the female,” a study by evolutionary biologists in Singapore concluded. And the point is?  Animals go through all kinds of courtship rituals, some much more elaborate than this.   Why do you suppose the researchers and the news media gave us this story, and used terms suggestive of prostitution?  Pure empirical science?  Knowledge for knowledge’s sake?    A clue might be found in another monkeyshine story on the BBC News: monkeys laugh.  “What is clear now is the building blocks of positive emotional contagion and empathy that refer to rapid involuntary facial mimicry in humans evolved prior to humankind,” a researcher said.  How clear is that?  Maybe the monkeys are practicing for American Idol.  Maybe they are telling the other monkey to shut up.    Darwinists are on a campaign to link everything about humans to monkeys, including our emotions, attitudes and sexual behaviors.  They think this will prove common ancestry.  No it won’t; creationists already acknowledge that humans have much in common with our creature friends.  We eat bananas, we scratch, we eliminate, we reproduce, some of us even climb trees.  So what?  Birds talk and use tools.  Does that mean we evolved from birds, or they from us?    If monkeys like a good grooming before sex, is that any more remarkable than the courtship ritual of the sage grouse?  If monkeys like to screech and howl and curl their lips, is that any more remarkable than a dog wagging its tail?  The Darwinists are trying to make a point, and we know that all too well.(Visited 13 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Tough breaks for SA in Davis Cup loss

first_img8 April 2013South Africa put up a brave fight, but minus the country’s top player and with the team’s number two suffering an injury, fell 3-1 to Poland in a Group One Europe/Africa Davis Cup tie played in Zielona Gora, Poland on the weekend.Kevin Anderson was unavailable, Rik de Voest suffered lower back problems during the clash and Raven Klaasen fractured a thumb in practice, while a number of other replacements – Izak van der Merwe, Nikala Scholtz, Fritz Wolmarans and Wayne Montgomery – were ruled out for various reasons too.South Africa had previously defeated Poland twice in the competition – 3-2 in both 1935 and 2003 – but with such obstacles it was little wonder that they went down this time against a strong Polish team.Opening dayThe opening day’s singles pitted Jerzy Janowicz, ranked 24th in the world, against Jean Anderson, ranked 758th. Andersen gave a good account of himself, but fell 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 to the Polish star.Rik de Voest, though, showed the kind of good form he has often produced in the Davis Cup when the world number 227 upset Lukasz Kubot, ranked 91st, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4.With Klaasen, ranked 54th in the world doubles rankings, out of the tie, De Voest teamed up with Andersen to face Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in Saturday’s doubles. It was a closely contested match which the Poles edged 7-5, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.‘Very tight’Matkowski commented afterwards: “De Voest’s game did not surprise us at all. Andersen played really well. Most of his errors were forced. We had to pressure him to make a mistake. It was a very tight match. We are very happy to be through in three sets.”It was a crucial clash and victory for Poland put the hosts on the verge of victory. A back problem for De Voest then handed them an even bigger advantage as South African captain De Jager was forced to play Ruan Roelofse, ranked 515th in the world, instead of De Voest in Sunday’s reverse singles.Facing Janowicz, Roelofse surprised by winning the first set. After that, however, the Polish number one found his game and went on to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 victory. The win sealed the tie and the remaining singles match between Andersen Kubot unnecessary.‘Tough’“It was a tough match,” De Jager commented after the Poles had sealed victory. “Today, in the morning, Rik reported he had a really stiff lower back and couldn’t play. He is getting older.“At first, before the tie, I thought he was going to play singles only. Then Raven got injured and given the score (1-1 after the first day), I knew that the doubles would be deciding and very important for us. So that’s why I decided Rik would play on Saturday.“We saw Lukasz was struggling on Friday, so we knew that by winning the doubles we could stay in the game. But today Rik told me he would be able to play 100 percent only for a set and it could potentially turn into five sets in the end, so that’s why I replaced him with Ruan.“He is still young. It was an opportunity for him to play and a very good experience.”South Africa will next face Slovenia from 13 to 15 September in a first round playoff. The winner will take on Russia from 18 to 20 October.Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

On-farm research, soil health and water quality

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Randall Reeder, Ohio State University Extension (retired)Forget about research plots 4 rows wide by 50 feet long. How about a plot 24 rows wide and a mile long? We’re not really ignoring small replicated plots on university research farms. But as Bob Nielsen of Purdue pointed out at the Conservation Tillage Conference on March 5, precision agriculture technologies enable researchers to design and conduct statistically sound field scale trials that minimize challenges for the farmer. Fields of 50 to 150 acres are ideal. Having different soil types can also add value to the results.OSU Extension Ag Educators and State Specialists work with farmers doing a variety of on-farm research, with most results published in eFields. Add a Text Message Chat to Live-Action Footage in After Effects

first_imgLearn how to design, animate, and composite a text message conversation with live-action footage in After Effects.Fifteen years ago, you would not see text messages on television and movie screens because they were not a primary form of communication. However, that’s not the case today. As technology advances and integrates further into our society, filmmakers gain new elements to use in their stories. With these new technological elements, the task of “how to incorporate them correctly in live-action footage” begins. In this After Effects tutorial, take a closer look at how to create a text message chat and composite it with your footage. Learn how to design the text bubbles, realistically animate each text message, and correctly composite your text messages over footage.Best Type of Footage to Composite Text Messages WithIf you are going to composite your text message chat with footage, there are a few things to keep in mind before you shoot. If you want your messages to stand out from the background, think about the color palette of your text message bubbles and light your footage accordingly.Have your talent act and react in a timely manner as he or she sends and receives each message. If you are in a low-light situation, don’t forget to make the light from the screen stand out.Be sure to get a static shot of your scene in case the motion shots don’t composite well with your text messages.Make it clear that your character is using the phone, or the result will be awkward. If you want to sell the text message effect even further, add sound effects. Be sure to check out our tutorial on creating a text message chat to see how to make your scene come to life in After Effects. Asian Games hockey: India score fourth straight win to storm into semi-finals

first_imgPenalty corner specialist Sandeep Singh struck twice to power India to a 3-2 win over Pakistan and into the semifinals of the Asian Games men’s hockey tournament in Guangzhou on Saturday. It was India’s fourth straight victory over Pakistan this year.Sandeep Singh scored India’s first and third goal in the third and 48th minute while Dharamvir Singh netted a fine field goal in between to ensure India’s third successive victory in Group B.Rehan Butt (fourth) and Shakeel Abbasi (43rd minute) scored for Pakistan. With nine points in their kitty, India are sitting on top of the table with one match to go against Japan on Sunday. Both Pakistan, who play Bangladesh in their last league match, and Japan have six points from three matches. In total contrast to their previous three victories over Pakistan this year — 4-1 in the World Cup, 4-2 in the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament and 7-4 Commonwealth Games — on Saturday India had to work quite hard and deal with a lot of pressure, especially in the second half.It was India’s third victory over Pakistan in 12 Asian Games clashes and 48th overall in 146 clashes. Both the teams found it difficult to control the ball on the bouncy pitch, which has come in for severe criticism in Guangzhou.India negated the Sohail Abbas factor by conceding only a late penalty corner to the famed striker in the 57th minute as Chetri stopped the drag-flick with the stick and sent it over the bar for a corner.advertisementFor India, the players who caught the eye were Sardar Singh who was rock solid in deep defense.Vikram Pillai was the hardworking midfielder while Tushar Khandekar was his ebullient self up-front and Arjun Halappa did his bit while Sandeep was poor in defending but excellent with his drag-flicks.Both the goals conceded by Rajpal Singh-led India were off defensive errors. On the first occasion there was none to intercept a pass from the right sent in by Pakistan’s Shafqat Rasool to their key man Rehan, who had enough time to send the ball past Indian custodian Bharat Chetri with a shot taken through his legs. The second Pakistan goal was also the result of a bungling defense with Sandeep being the main culprit in not clearing the ball inside the 25 yard line and allowing Abbasi to take it past a clueless Mahadik and find the mark. The penalty corner through which Sandeep scored India’s opening goal was a result of a move from the right flank. He drag-flicked it to the right of rival custodian and captain Zeeshan Ashraf.Pakistan equalised immediately on the counter attack which caught the Indians napping. But India struck a superb goal midway through the first half to again put its nose ahead. Dharamvir connected the ball superbly, while on the run, sent in the D by Shivendra Singh.Crossing over, Pakistan were aggressive initially and came close to scoring on two occasions within the first five minutes. But India escaped as Abbasi hit over the bar and Chetri was alert enough to foil a concerted move from right. The Indian goal was breached finally when both Sandeep and Mahadik were found wanting to prevent Abbasi from taking control of a thorough pass into the D sent from the 25 yard line. The former delayed in clearing and the latter just could not prevent the player from taking a shot though he was nearby. But India struck back within five minutes to score the all-important goal of the match by earning their second penalty corner of the match with a move from the right.Sandeep made no mistake to score his eighth goal of the tournament.Pakistan then earned their first and only penalty corner but Sohail failed to convert it and then Sardar Singh blocked Rehan Butt’s effort right in front of the goal line with his stick in time to deflect the shot above the bar.India then pressed hard for another goal to seal off Pakistan’s escape route, and also earned a last-minute penalty corner which was taken after the long hooter, but for the first time Sandeep Singh failed to convert.India coach Jose Brasa slammed the pitch conditions.”It was very difficult to control the ball on this pitch. We had a problem in the build up of moves. We had to play a controlled and tactical game. But now we need only one more point to top our group,” he said.”But if we had to play on these type of pitches, it’s better For FIH to go back to playing hockey on grass. Our boys will now be more comfortable and confident,” he added.advertisement With PTI inputslast_img read more

Bangalorebased company Byjus to replace OPPO on Team Indias jersey

first_imgThe Indian contingent.Hagen Hopkins/Getty ImagesTeam India’s jersey sponsors Chinese mobile-maker OPPO is reportedly going to part ways with the Men in Blue as Bangalore-based education technology and online tutoring firm Byju’s will take over the jerseys rights, as reported by the Times of India. The name of the Chinese mobile company which bought the jersey rights in March 2017 with a whopping winning bid of Rs 1,079 crore, will no longer feature on the Team India jersey from the month of September. As per TOI reports, OPPO decided to discontinue the deal and gave it to Byju’s because they have found the sum of money to be very high and also unsustainable.Byju’s, currently valued at Rs 38,000 crore was started in 2013 by Kerala-based entrepreneur Byju Raveendran and in the present financial year, they have ensured funding of around Rs 5,172 crore from global investors which include Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative. They have been also looking for branding excercises of such a huge volume so it fits them perfectly, sources told TOI. Team India sporting the special cap.Robert Cianflone/Getty Images”They’ve been looking for branding exercises of this volume and it’s (Team India jersey rights) is just the kind of space they wanted to get into. At the moment they fit absolutely well here,” said sources.BCCI will receive the same sum of money from Byju’s and will not incur any loss for the deal till it ends on March 31, 2022, according to a BCCI source. The South Africa tour will feature the Indian team sporting the national team jersey with Byju’s name on it and the work of changing the jersey is already on, sources mentioned.”Basically, what Oppo has done is cut its losses. They’ve reassigned the rights to Byju’s. They will pay Byju’s a minor amount to help make the full payment while Byju’s will pay BCCI. The board will continue to get what is due to it,” sources told TOI.The Men in Blue are going to face West Indies in the Caribbeans for three ODIs and T20s and two Tests. The Test series will be a part of ICC’s World Test Championship.last_img read more
