Roberto Machado Noa/LightRocket via Getty Images) Maybe it really is evolving?AT&T’s wireless network was named the fastest in the US, it announced Wednesday, based on an analysis of speeds over the first quarter of 2019 by Ookla’s Speedtest. It noted that AT&T’s speeds improved by more than 15% during that period, while the other carriers plateaued.AT&T’s speeds jumped from 34.3 megabytes per second (MBPS) to 40.7 MBPS, according to the data it presented. By comparison, T-Mobile hit 35.4 MBPS, Sprint reached 34.9 MBPS and Verizon was at 33.3 MBPS.Keep in mind that different tests have yielded different results. Last month, OpenSignal, another firm that tests wireless speeds, said it found that AT&T’s controversial 5G E (short for 5G Evolution) clocked in slower than services from Verizon and T-Mobile. However, AT&T dismissed Opensignal’s method as flawed. Internet Services Tech Industry 1:58 Comments In its announcement Wednesday, AT&T highlighted its 5G E service — which is really just fancy branding for its advanced 4G LTE network — as a major factor in its speed growth, saying it laid the foundation for the upgrade to 5G next-generation cellular technology.”We are thrilled Ookla has confirmed that we are the fastest wireless network nationwide,” said Andre Fuetsch, president of AT&T Labs and chief technology officer. “This is further proof that our wireless network strategy and build are benefiting our customers in ways that other carriers cannot match.” Responding to results from Speedtest, Verizon asserted that its wireless network is the fastest and most reliable.”The evidence is overwhelming that the Verizon wireless network is best, fastest and most reliable,” said spokesperson Howie Waterman in an emailed statement. “We focus on deploying the best technologies for our customers, at scale.”T-Mobile made a similar claim, noting that that people use their phones for upload as well as download.”When you look at the overall customer experience, there’s only one fastest LTE network: T-Mobile,” said Neville Ray, its chief technology officer. “We’ve led the industry on LTE speed for five years (20 straight quarters), all without lying to customers or pretending LTE is 5G.”Sprint didn’t responded to a request for comment. Entrepreneur magazine, April 1999Late last year, Vice President Al Gore placed the world’s first call on a satellite phone handset. From the White House, Gore dialed up Dr. Robert Ballard, the research scientist and deep-sea explorer who discovered the sunken Titanic in 1983. After nearly a decade of hype, and plenty of failed experiments, satellite telephones have finally arrived.Just what are satellite phones? In look, feel and operability, they’re nearly identical to conventional cellular phones. But as any heavy cell phone user can attest, conventional cellular phones and even sophisticated digital wireless phones have limited capabilities. You can use them only in prescribed areas, and if your cellular phone carrier doesn’t offer service in that area, you’re out of luck.Satellite phones provide service anywhere, any time to any user. They send their telephone signals to satellites orbiting the earth, which then transmit them to other satellites that beam them down to their final destination. They allow you to make a call from a mountaintop, your car, or even from the Oval Office, if you have that kind of access.Costs are about 10 percent more than conventional cellular service–but for entrepreneurs who always have to be in touch, the expense may be worth it. Currently, American Mobile Satellite Corp. and Motorola are among the companies that offer satellite services.Gene Koprowski has covered the tech industry for 10 years and writes a monthly computing column for “The Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition.” Contact him at firstname.lastname@example.org 2 min read Register Now » Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right.
Today Microsoft unveiled what it says will be a unifying platform across more devices than ever before: Windows 10.The new operating system, which won’t be available until next year, is designed for desktop and mobile devices that use either a keyboard and mouse or a touch interface. Terry Myerson, head of the company’s operating systems group, said it will be a “one application platform” with a single store and “one way for applications to be discovered, purchased and updated across all of these devices.”With Windows 10, Microsoft is trying to merge the best part of its touch-focused Windows 8, which alienated some traditional Windows users, with an experience similar to its well-received Windows 7. “Windows 10 will deliver the right experience… at the right time,” he said. The new operating system will have a universal search feature and a revamped Start menu.Related: Microsoft Accidentally Teases Windows 9, Quickly Deletes PostFor enterprise customers, Myerson said the new operating system would include all of the tools they’ve come to expect and be compatible with management systems already in place. He also said Windows 10 offered a “novel approach of separating corporate and personal data” across devices — a pitch aimed at companies worried about the messy entanglement of business and personal information stored on many employees’ computers and smartphones. In a live demonstration today in San Francisco, the company showed off the new Start Menu with customizable tiles and a universal search feature that also pulls in web results, similar to Spotlight on OS X.”We’re looking to find the balance, so that all the Windows 7 users get a familiar experience on the devices they already have,” said Joe Belifore, corporate vice president of operating systems. “It gives the familiarity of Windows 7 with some of the elements of Windows 8.”Some of the other features Belifore showed off have an emphasis on productivity, including a new “task view” button that shows all apps currently open and gives users options to use multiple desktops, similar to Expose in OS X.Related: In Risky Move, Microsoft to Open NYC Flagship Right Near Apple’sOther new productivity features let users run different apps in different desktops to keep things organized and the “Snap Assistant” lets users rearrange apps from multiple desktops and snap them into place, just like in Windows 7.Belifore demonstrated another feature called “Continuum” designed to make the integration of touch and traditional keyboard and mouse interfacing more seamless in two-in-one devices.Windows 10 will be released sometime in 2015 after Microsoft’s Build Conference in April, but the company is asking for customer feedback through its Windows Insider Program.Related: Using Wearable Devices to Help Promote Employee Wellness Listen Now 3 min read Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Register Now » October 9, 2014 Billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn said Apple Inc’s shares could double in value and urged the company’s board to buy back more shares using its $133 billion cash pile.”We believe Apple is dramatically undervalued in today’s market, and the more shares repurchased now, the more each remaining shareholder will benefit …,” Icahn said in a letter to Apple’s board. Icahn, who pledged to keep his own stock out of any repurchase, said Apple stock should be trading at $203.The company’s shares were up 1 percent at $101.91 in early trading on Thursday.Icahn said Apple was poised to take market share from Google Inc’s Android platform in the premium device market and forecast the company’s earnings to grow 44 percent in FY 2015.Apple declined to comment directly on Icahn’s letter. Spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said in an email: “We always appreciate hearing from our shareholders.”Apple will review its share repurchase program annually and take into account the input of all of its shareholders, Huguet said.Icahn, who owns about 53 million Apple shares, has in the past urged Apple to return more of its cash to shareholders and pressured the company to increase its stock buyback program and raise its dividend.”We think a tender offer is simply a good method of conducting a large repurchase in an expedited timeframe, but the exact method and the exact size is not the key issue for us,” he said.In February, Icahn backed off from his campaign urging Apple to increase buybacks after the company disclosed it had repurchased $40 billion of its shares over the past 12 months. The investor said on Thursday his letter was not intended to criticize Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook but just urges the company to take advantage of the low valuation.According to StarMine’s Intrinsic Valuation model, Apple shares are slightly undervalued compared to their current trading levels. The stock should be trading at $111.4, implying compounded annual earnings growth rate of 8 percent over the next 10 years, StarMine data showed.(Reporting by Supantha Mukherjee and Anya George Tharakan in Bangalore and Svea A.
