Chris Gayle was wrong, but …

first_imgYES! Chris Gayle was wrong to proposition Australian journalist Mel McLaughlin during the live-television interview. After all, the big Jamaican paid his US$7,000 fine and he apologised to Ms McIntosh, who duly accepted his apology, but somehow this issue just won’t go away. Some of us dare to opine that this issue has been massively blown out of proportion and that the “sin” of pursuing a woman, even though executed inappropriately and unprofessionally, in no way merits the level of vitriolic and fervent attacks and criticisms that have come the way of the swashbuckling left-handed batsman. That position is in some quarters being misconstrued to mean unequivocal support for Gayle. There appears to be an intolerant unwillingness to entertain any semblance of independence of thought on this issue, which has now ballooned beyond the point of the denouncement and condemnation of Gayle’s actions. There now appears to be much more than meets the eye swirling around Gayle’s awkward, almost embarrassing attempt at flirting with the Aussie journalist, with the introduction of agenda-laced terms such as sexual harassment, sexism, and misogyny, which forces one to wonder if the legitimate cries against Gayle’s actions have not now totally lost credibility.DOUBLE STANDARDThere is the glaring double standard and hypocrisy as it relates to tennis superstar Maria Sharapova’s equally unprofessional and inappropriate flirtation with a male journalist in the very same country, Australia. The disparity in how those moments were treated compared to how Gayle’s indiscretions have been treated locally and internationally stinks to the high heavens.Again, some of us dare to ask the question, why? When one prominent Australian commentator, Ian Chappell, the man who, incidentally, committed the far worse offence of dropping his pants in the middle of a domestic game in Australia while he was Australia’s captain, when such a compromised character comes out and advocates a worldwide ban for Chris Gayle, where else can the rational mind go but to a place that says a black man from the Caribbean is prohibited from setting his personal sights on such a symbol of white Australian beauty.Another instructive dynamic is the level of condemnation coming the way of Gayle from his fellow Jamaicans. While understanding the emotional rebuff to a prominent and successful Jamaican man choosing to pursue a foreign white woman, substantively ignoring his black Jamaican girls, outside of the understandable emotional backlash from that dynamic, there seems to be a wider, and more strident, conviction to get Chris Gayle from his very own people.Another stark reminder of our propensity as a people to tear down our own, I think Jamaicans are more expert at doing that than any other nationality in the world. We really do epitomise the ‘crab in barrell’ syndrome. If Chris Gayle was of any other nationality, he would absolutely get more support from his own people. As was the case when he strolled into the middle in the very next Big Bash game after the controversy erupted – where he was welcomed to rapturous applause by the Australian crowd – he was even hugged by an Australian woman. But with all of that healing and reconciliation taking place Down Under, here in Jamaica, the desperate hunt is on for even more of Chris Gayle’s blood. Gofigure!last_img read more

What is a digital currency and how does cryptocurrency mining work

first_imgVANCOUVER – Cryptocurrency is a digital currency with no physical form or intrinsic value, but is an increasingly hot commodity as Bitcoin, its most well-known iteration, flirts with a record high.Bitcoin, the self-proclaimed original decentralized digital currency, is hovering around US$8,000 as investors pour into alternative currencies. Many other types of cryptocurrencies exist, including Monero and Litecoin. These digital currencies are decentralized, meaning there is no third-party authority like a bank that oversees activity, and transactions happen directly between two individuals. This offers some benefits, such as lower fees and global use.Cryptocurrencies rely on blockchain technology. The blockchain is a public ledger of the currency’s transactions.Generally speaking, there are two ways to obtain cryptocurrencies: A person can purchase units on an exchange, or they can participate in cryptocurrency mining.Miners secure cryptocurrency networks. They receive new issues of the currency for verifying transactions, which are then recorded on the blockchain.Miners run software that can require special hardware, like asic chips — designed for Bitcoin mining. Their computers solve complicated math problems in exchange for new issues of the currency. A mathematical proof of work, created by trying billions of calculations per second, is required to confirm a Bitcoin transaction. The more puzzles a miner solves, the more cryptocurrency they earn — incentivizing miners to participate and strengthening the overall system. On Bitcoin’s network, the problems become more complex if they are being solved too quickly. As more miners joined the system and the problems grew very difficult, miners started to pool together to do this work.Once purchased or mined, cryptocurrency lives in the individual’s digital wallet and can be used to purchase items online or at local stores that accept the currency. The digital currency’s value is derived from demand. At the time of writing, one Bitcoin was worth roughly $9,800 (it is highly volatile), while Monero has yet to hit four-digit worth.Sources: PwC, Bitcoin, We Use Coins, Litecoin, Monerolast_img read more

Vedanta and Cairn India to Merge in a Deal Worth 23 Billion

first_imgIndian mining and energy group Vedanta Ltd made a $2.3 billion offer on Sunday to buy out minority shareholders in cash-rich oil unit Cairn India, a deal that helps parent Vedanta Resources Plc repay hefty debts.Shareholders in Cairn India, India’s top private sector oil producer, will get one share in Vedanta Ltd for every share held, the companies said in a joint statement on Sunday. The shareholders will also get one redeemable preference share in Vedanta Ltd with a face value of 10 rupees, making the deal worth roughly $2.3 billion. That implies a premium of 7.3 percent to Cairn’s Friday close and a ratio of 1.04 for 1, marginally better than expectations of a simple 1 for 1 swap.Vedanta began simplifying its complex structure with a 2012 overhaul, but further moves to clean up the group and buy out minorities in its cash generating units have long been awaited by the market. Cairn India has a roughly $2.6 billion cash pile. The deal, expected to close in the first quarter of 2016, is the first major structural change under Vedanta Ltd Chief Executive Tom Albanese, the former Rio Tinto boss appointed last year. He said the deal moved Vedanta closer to its goal of being a major diversified player.Though long-expected, the timing of the Cairn buyout is likely to have been triggered by a sharp drop in Cairn India’s stock as oil prices fell, making for a favourable merger ratio for Vedanta. Cairn India shares have dropped over 50 percent over the past year.MORE TO COMEVedanta Resource Plc, controlled by one-time scrap metal dealer Anil Agarwal, currently holds a majority interest in Mumbai-listed operating unit Vedanta Ltd, which in turn holds a 59.88 percent stake in Cairn India. But Vedanta Ltd also holds other assets, including about 65 percent in Hindustan Zinc, whose minorities are likely to be the next target of the group’s clean-up effort, and aluminium producer BALCO, in which it has a 51 percent stake. Both companies count the Indian government as minority shareholders, limiting Vedanta’s ability to move.”We would look forward to participate in what would likely be an auction at that point in time,” Albanese said on Sunday.Cairn, which in March said it would cut spending by about 60 percent for the fiscal year starting April 1, said those plans, closely watched by India’s government, would be unchanged.Vedanta is also currently contesting a $3.3 billion tax claim from the tax authorities in relation to Cairn India’s 2007 listing. That liability and a $1.2 billion inter-company loan advanced by Cairn India to its parent last year were factored into the deal, Vedanta Chief Financial Officer DD Jalan said. The deal will now have to be approved by regulators but also, under new rules in India, by a majority of the companies’ minority shareholders. Cairn’s largest minority holder is former owner Cairn Energy Plc, which has been looking to sell.Cairn Energy said on Sunday it would assess the proposal.Lazard & Co advised Vedanta Ltd, while JP Morgan Cazenove and Morgan Stanley were joint advisers to Vedanta Plc.last_img read more

Five simple ways to keep weight in check

first_imgWith the festive season approaching, keeping a tab on your weight can be a little difficult. A few precautions can be taken to avoid gaining excessive weight. Here are some suggestions form an expert.Binge-eating at odd timings is a holiday delight but going overboard is very unhealthy and very easy. Skipping meals to balance out festive eating is also a very bad idea, as it only makes one ravenous later. To avoid consuming a lot of calories, eat a filling, low-calorie snack or dish before leaving for a celebration. Protein, especially, will keep you feeling full, ensuring you only eat festival treats in small amounts.  Also Read – Add new books to your shelfAlso try factoring in a few days of light eating prior to the festive season, in addition to consuming alkaline foods including spinach, broccoli and banana. The best way to control what you consume is to assume the role of the chef. Chefs have to do a lot of tasting and all that time spent in the kitchen does take the edge off hunger. Cooking, or at least deciding what is to be cooked and how, will allow you absolute control over the amount of calories you consume.  Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveChoose the menu wisely, offer guests a range of healthy snacks. Grilling instead of frying, and steaming vegetables to retain nutrients are handy ways to reduce fat intake. Using a low-calorie spray oil is also a great way to roast food in a healthier manner.A fridge stocked with treats after celebrations are over, is not exactly your best bet. If you are the host, make sure to only order or cook as much as needed, carefully drawing up a menu and quantity list.  Liquids are an important component of our diets, and binge consumption sessions are no different. A lot of times, our bodies mistake thirst for hunger, which leads to overeating. Craving snacks repeatedly can be a sign of dehydration. A good diet hack is to drink a glass full of water and wait for 10 minutes and then reconsider whether you want to give in to those cravings or not. Drinking other liquids is also a good solution to hunger pangs, especially having fresh home-made or cold pressed juice blends as perfect and delicious alternatives. This should not be an excuse to have ‘juice drinks’ (which are loaded with sugar and chemicals) or aerated drinks. Alcohol is another high-calorie liquid that should be consumed in moderation. Try beginning the night with a refreshing mocktail, and alternate each drink with water or juice. Choosing low-calorie alcohol, including drier varieties of white and red wine, gin, champagne and light beer is also advisable. The holiday season takes up a lot of energy, throwing us off the gym schedules and even our regular sleep cycles. Countering this disruption is important, even if the effort put in is minimal. So, working out for half an hour instead of your usual hour and a half is a much better idea than skipping gym entirely.last_img read more

Grey hair linked to higher heart disease risk in men

first_imgMen with more grey hair – irrespective of age – may be at increased risk of heart disease, warns a new study.”Our findings suggest that, irrespective of chronological age, hair greying indicates biological age and could be a warning sign of increased cardiovascular risk,” said Irini Samuel, a cardiologist at Cairo University, Egypt. Atherosclerosis, build-up of fatty material inside the arteries, and hair greying share similar mechanisms such as impaired DNA repair, oxidative stress, inflammation, hormonal changes and senescence of functional cells. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”Atherosclerosis and hair greying occur through similar biological pathways and the incidence of both increases with age,” Samuel added. This study – presented at EuroPrevent 2017, annual congress of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC), being held at Malaga, Spain from April 6-8 – involved 545 adult men.The researchers assessed the prevalence of grey hair in patients with coronary artery disease – usually caused by atherosclerosis – and whether it was an independent risk marker of disease. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveThe amount of grey hair was graded using the hair whitening score – one referring to pure black hair, two to black more than white, three to black equals white, four to white more than black, and five to pure white. Data was collected on traditional cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, diabetes, smoking, dyslipidaemia and family history of coronary artery disease. The researchers found that a high hair whitening score (grade three or more) was associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease independent of chronological age and established cardiovascular risk factors. Patients with coronary artery disease had a statistically significant higher hair whitening score and higher coronary artery calcification than those without coronary artery disease.”A larger study including men and women is required to confirm the association between hair greying and cardiovascular disease in patients without other known cardiovascular risk factors,” Samuel said.”Further research is needed, in coordination with dermatologists, to learn more about the causative genetic and possible avoidable environmental factors that determine hair whitening,” she add.last_img read more

Speed Up Your Site With AJAX

first_imgMarch 1, 2007 This story appears in the March 2007 issue of Entrepreneur. Subscribe » Melissa Campanelli is a marketing and technology writer in New York City. 3 min read Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.center_img Want to increase the interactivity, speed and usability of your web pages? AJAX could be the answer. Short for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, AJAX is a web development technique for creating interactive web applications. In general, it makes web pages feel more responsive by exchanging small amounts of data with a server behind the scenes so an entire web page does not have to be reloaded each time the user makes a change. The benefits are obvious to Fairytale Brownies in Chandler, Arizona, which recently implemented AJAX to speed up the checkout process on its site. Founded in 1992 by childhood friends Eileen Joy Spitalny and David Kravetz, both 40, Fairytale Brownies is the nation’s leading purveyor of mail-order gourmet brownies, with 2007 sales projections of $8.9 million. When the company recently redesigned its website to make its brownies look more appealing, it used AJAX to speed up the gift list checkout section.”This gift list shows our customers who received gifts from them before,” explains Spitalny. “It’s a very popular feature, but we wanted to make it as quick and easy to use as possible.”Before AJAX, any change to addresses, ship dates, quantities or gift messages meant waiting for entire web pages to reload. But AJAX loads pages only once; changes need only small data updates. This translates into a smoother process that benefits not only customers, but also employees, who spend less time on the phone with customers.Fairytale employed an outside consultant to implement AJAX. Spitalny suggests finding a programmer who is familiar with JavaScripting and XML. She also suggests a visit to http://ajax.asp.net, a Microsoft site that provides free tutorials and starter kits to help programmers understand the technology. Before implementing an AJAX redesign, consider the following tips from David Fry, founder, president and CEO of Fry Inc., an e-commerce design, development and managed services provider in Ann Arbor, Michigan.1. Perform a usability test. Determine your goal in using AJAX and then select a small audience to try it on. If they like it, expand its use.2. Make sure AJAX doesn’t affect your search rankings. AJAX can distort search rankings because web crawlers have to parse the information differently. To get around it, you’ll have to work with someone experienced with the issue.3. AJAX performs differently with different browsers. Internet Explorer 7 is AJAX-friendly, but if you code your site to be compatible with IE7, it might not be compatible with IE6. Canadians visiting Maui are among Hawaiis big spenders Yes really

first_img Share Posted by Jean Sorensen Tuesday, March 6, 2018 Canadians visiting Maui are among Hawaii’s ‘big spenders’. Yes, reallycenter_img VANCOUVER — When the Maui Visitors and Convention Bureau (MVCB) landed in Vancouver recently to promote the tri-island destinations of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai, it should have been humming the show tune refrain “Hey Big Spender”.The latest figures from the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), for January 2018, show that Canadians in Maui are among the big spenders for the destination, with their monthly increase in spending outstripping all other Hawaiian islands and resulting in a record expenditures to kick off 2018. The MVCB hosted a dinner at Vancouver’s Blue Water Café, eager to meet with the travel trade and keep the visitor numbers pumped.Leaning on research figures, Leanne Pletcher, Director of Media Relations and Marketing for the MVCB, said spend is definitely up. “The Canadian market has been very strong because of the weather,” she said. Figures for 2017 from the HTA show a 12% gain in Canadian visitors to Maui, the Hawaiian chain’s second largest island.HTA spending statistics for January 2018 show just how much all visitors are opening their wallets. All visitors to Maui, a long-time favourite destination for Canadians, increased their spending by a whopping 18% over last January, spending $548.5 million. That figure compares to the island of Hawaii (which saw a 1.8% gain to $268.2 million) and Kauai which had a 2.3% gain to $191.2 million. The January figures were the highest monthly totals ever recorded for each island, according to the HTA. Visitor spending on Oahu declined slightly (-1.9% to $662.0 million) in January compared to last year.Figures also show that the Canadian market is rebounding after a stagnant 2015 and 2016. In 2017, Canadian visitors spent $1.03 billion, an 8.1% increase over the previous year, while visitor arrivals increased 10.4% to 518,051. Scheduled air carrier seats out of Canada grew 5.5% in December 2017, with more seats out of Vancouver. The Maui delegation to Vancouver brought news of a number of new property renovations and excursions for travel agents.Krystle Alcain, PR Manager for Westin properties including Ka’anapali Ocean Resort and Nanea Ocean Villas, says the two properties cater to multi-generation family visits with one, two, and three bedrooms suites, with kitchen.WESTIN HOTELS & RESORTSWestin opened its Nanea Ocean Villas in April 2017, a resort property with eight buildings and 390 suites spread over 16 acres. Westin representative Krystle Alcain said the new resort offers one-, two- and three-bedroom suites and a highly sought-after property for multi-generational visits. “They have fully equipped kitchens,” she said, adding that there is also a dedicated children’s pool facility. The new property is also close to a Times Supermarket and has a small grocery outlet on site for essentials.More news:  Kory Sterling is TL Network Canada’s new Sales Manager CanadaThe Nanea is nearby the Westin’s other signature resort. Situated on 26 acres of beachfront, the Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas is also a AAA Four Diamond resort that is suitable for multi-generational visits, said Alcain. One of the features of the two properties is the ability to share facilities. Westin’s third property on the Island is the Maui Resort and Spa, which unlike the villas, offers mainly hotel style rooms and is popular for couples, but can accommodate a couple with a child, says Alcain.THE RITZ-CARLTON KAPALUAThe Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is a property that has undergone a $30 million facelift with the bulk of the major revamp finished in January of this year. The luxury resort is a popular wedding site. “We have about 150 a year,” said Communications Manager, Deanna Miller, adding that several sites are allocated through the resort for weddings. The upgrade includes newly transformed guest rooms (with Nespresso coffee machines and wireless Internet able to accommodate 10 streaming devices), suites and residences, an enhanced lobby and pool and Kai Café. The decor reflects the heritage and scenic beauty of the island with rooms having floor to ceiling glass windows. The last phase of the upgrade will be the Banyan Tree and Terrace breakfast restaurants, which is to be complete in fall 2018.The renovations were started two years ago when Trinity Investment purchased the AAA Five Diamond resort which has 297 guest rooms and 107 residence condos (the first phase of the upgrade) from partnership Woodridge Capital and Colony Capital and others for $210 million. Trinity gained control of the 54 acre property in November 2016 and at that time announced it was embarking on an upgrade to make the 25-year-old facility more competitive.Candy Aluli, representing the Napili Kai Beach Resort, shows off one of Hawaii’s attractions: beautiful flora.NAPILI KAI BEACH RESORTCandy Aluli, representing Napili Kai Beach Resort, said the luxury property property will appeal to those interested in the environment. In December 2017 the Napili Resort embarked upon a campaign on its beachfront to educate bathers about the dangers of using sunscreen with ingredients that are harmful to the coral reefs. Guest checking in at the luxury property that is located in a reef protected bay will receive a free sample of a reef-safe sunscreen along with a discount coupon for purchasing more. The resort’s beach staff also walks the shoreline providing information to sunbathers on the beach about the importance of examining sunscreen ingredients. Research has found that sunscreen with harmful chemical toxins are killing the coral reefs in Hawaii.More news:  Flights cancelled as British Airways hit by computer problemThe 163-room hotel, located in a scenic bay, includes studios, one and two bedroom suites (most with kitchen) in 11 low-rise plantation style buildings. Approximately 96% of the rooms offer ocean views looking out over the bay it is situated in. Facilities include a beachfront restaurant and bar (the landmark Sea House Restaurant), four swimming pools, a boutique spa, fitness room, large ocean view whirlpool spa, and two 18-hole putting greens, one for adults and one for children.Golf and tennis are available in the adjacent Kapalua Resort community. The Napili Kai offers complimentary parking, free in-room wireless, kids age 10 and under eat free, no hidden charges or resort fees and other complimentary services.LANAI: HOME TO HAWAII’S MOST EXPENSIVE SUITEBridgett Parker, MVCB’s Social Marketing Manager, said those staying on Maui can easily travel to nearby Lanai by public ferry. While the 140-acre island is rustic in nature and 98% of it is owned by Oracle Corporation co-founder and billionaire Larry Ellison (who purchased the island in 2012), it does welcome visitors.Lanai also features Hawaii’s most expensive hotel suite, selling at $21,000 a night. Ellison acquired two hotels in the deal when he purchased the bulk of the island for $300 million. One features an 11-room Hawaiian style hotel, while the other is the Mandele Bay which went through an extensive upgrade to a luxury facility with Ellison overseeing the renovation. He reduced the number of rooms from 286 to 217 to provide more luxuries. Guests at the property gain access to the facility’s golf course which is a favourite of Bill Gates.
