Bangalorebased company Byjus to replace OPPO on Team Indias jersey

first_imgThe Indian contingent.Hagen Hopkins/Getty ImagesTeam India’s jersey sponsors Chinese mobile-maker OPPO is reportedly going to part ways with the Men in Blue as Bangalore-based education technology and online tutoring firm Byju’s will take over the jerseys rights, as reported by the Times of India. The name of the Chinese mobile company which bought the jersey rights in March 2017 with a whopping winning bid of Rs 1,079 crore, will no longer feature on the Team India jersey from the month of September. As per TOI reports, OPPO decided to discontinue the deal and gave it to Byju’s because they have found the sum of money to be very high and also unsustainable.Byju’s, currently valued at Rs 38,000 crore was started in 2013 by Kerala-based entrepreneur Byju Raveendran and in the present financial year, they have ensured funding of around Rs 5,172 crore from global investors which include Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative. They have been also looking for branding excercises of such a huge volume so it fits them perfectly, sources told TOI. At the moment they fit absolutely well here,” said sources.BCCI will receive the same sum of money from Byju’s and will not incur any loss for the deal till it ends on March 31, 2022, according to a BCCI source. The South Africa tour will feature the Indian team sporting the national team jersey with Byju’s name on it and the work of changing the jersey is already on, sources mentioned.”Basically, what Oppo has done is cut its losses. They’ve reassigned the rights to Byju’s. They will pay Byju’s a minor amount to help make the full payment while Byju’s will pay BCCI. The board will continue to get what is due to it,” sources told TOI.The Men in Blue are going to face West Indies in the Caribbeans for three ODIs and T20s and two Tests. The Test series will be a part of ICC’s World Test Championship.last_img read more

Death toll rises to 17 in Delhi hotel fire

first_imgDelhi Fire Services (DFS) and Delhi police personnel stand outside Hotel Arpit Palace after extinguishing a fire that broke out on its premises in New Delhi on 12 February 2019. Photo: AFPAt least 17 people died on Tuesday as a fire tore through a budget hotel in Delhi before dawn, in the latest disaster to raise concerns over fire safety in India. The fire broke out at the Hotel Arpit Palace in a congested part of central Delhi, with images showing it engulfing the entire top floor.”We have confirmed with hospital authorities, the toll is now 17 including a child,” Sunil Choudhary, a fire brigade official, told AFP.Local media reports said the woman and the child died as they tried to escape by jumping from a window.G.C. Misra, Delhi fire brigade director, said the blaze had been brought under control and that 35 people were rescued by firefighters in an operation lasting several hours.”There was wooden panelling on corridors because of which people could not use corridors to evacuate,” another fire officer told reporters.Images showed thick smoke and flames billowing out of the top floor of four-storey hotel, popular with budget travellers.Police said they were investigating the cause. The blaze was extinguished in the early hours with the help of at least 25 fire engines, with the top floors being gutted.Fires are common across India because of poor safety standards and lax enforcement of regulations.Activists say builders and landlords often cut corners on safety to save costs and have accused civic authorities of negligence and apathy.Fire disasters are particularly frequent in Mumbai, India’s financial capital where millions live in cramped and dilapidated properties because of high rents. In December, eight people were killed when a fire engulfed a hospital in Mumbai. In 2017, 14 people were killed, also in Mumbai, when a huge blaze tore through a popular restaurant.last_img read more

Poverty A Big Problem For Texas Women

first_imgListen Florian MartinPanelists with the Dallas Women’s Foundation and Texas Woman’s University discuss the 2017 report on women’s economic issues.A new report by the Dallas Women’s Foundation presented Friday at the Texas Woman’s University in Houston presents policy solutions to tackle women’s poverty in Texas.“Not only are women more likely to live in poverty,” said Frances Deviney, associate director at the Center for Public Policy Priorities, which conducted the study. “But even when you actually look at the data on how much women are making if they’re above the poverty level, they’re still paid significantly less than men.”That’s a problem, Deviney said, because 61 percent of Texas families rely on women’s incomes. The report identifies four categories – which it calls building blocks for women’s economic security: education, child care, health insurance and housing. “Within each of those building blocks, we not only examine the data but we also look at recommendations for solutions that communities, the state and business can adopt to help advance women economically and therefore advance Texas economically,” Roslyn Dawson Thompson, president and CEO of the Dallas Women’s Foundation, said.In child care, for example, one recommendation is for the state to fund fulltime pre-K programs. In higher education, the report calls for subsidizing dual enrollment courses that let students earn college credits while in high school.
